UPDATE Wed 17th April 2024:
Further to a guilty verdict in November last year, a man was sentenced for the attempted murder of two elderly worshippers, one of whom is a regular attendee and congregation member at the West London Islamic Centre. It was by the Grace of God, that both barely survived these premeditated, unprovoked and cowardly attacks. We welcome the sentence and are relieved that a degree of justice has been served, our prayers and thoughts remain with our elders Hashi Odowa and Mohammed Rayaz from Birmingham. We pray that they are able to overcome, with the love and support of their families and community, the pain and trauma that they have so bravely endured.
In light of the Judge’s sentencing remarks, there should be no stigma or fear for anyone who feels they are suffering from mental health concerns, which effect one in four adults, over 60% of whom do not access treatment. We encourage members of all our communities to safeguard their mental health and to actively seek the readily available help and support they may require.
UPDATE Wed 22nd March 2023:
WLIC welcomed the arrrest of a suspect for the abhorrent and malicious attacks on two elders within our community, in London and Birmingham. We would like to thank both the MET and West Midlands Police for their support and efforts in apprehending this individual. As we commence the blessed month of Ramadan, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
Our community at the UKIM West London Islamic Centre was shocked by the appalling and senseless attack on one of regular elderly worshippers Mr Hashi. A respected member of our congregation, Mr Hashi was accosted by a stranger on Singapore Road as he left the evening prayer at approximately 8pm on Monday 27th February. Following a short exchange, the perpetrator doused him with a flammable liquid, set him alight and ran away.
Very fortunately, Mr Hashi’s friend who was waiting nearby in his car, reacted quickly by putting out the flames and calling the emergency services. Mr Hashi was taken to hospital and treated for severe burns to his face and arms. He was released the following day.
The Centre and the community are cooperating with the police to help apprehend this dangerous individual. Understandably there are heightened concerns and anxiety within the community whilst the suspect remains at large. Our congregation remains vigilant. We would like to express our wholehearted thanks to the police and local Safer Neighbourhood Team for their support and regular patrols around the Centre which have reassured worshippers.
Mr Hashi is recuperating from his ordeal with his family and is in good spirits. He has been visited by members of the Centre management and congregation, having been presented with get well gifts and messages. Click here for details on the original police appeal. Anyone with further information should contact the police on 101 and use the reference 6422/27FEB.
