Following the success of the first-ever UK Muslim boxing exhibition held in May 2007, the second event was again an exciting, adrenlin packed family affair, with over 350 people in attendance.
The event is organised by IPO and the Muslim Directory in conjunction with the West London Islamic Centre Sports Committee. The afternoon had 15 bouts (not fights 😉 with boxers from gyms across London, congregating to showcase the excellent work being done in the community to provide both the youth and adults with recreational facilities to keep them fit and healthy and to encourage them to enjoy themselves in a Halal way.
As per policy all bouts were strictly refereed in accordance with ABA rules and additional safeguards included the mandatory wearing of head guards and heavier 16 ounce gloves. The special rules of the event meant that all participants boxed in a fraternal and brotherly environment, with compulsory end of bout hugs and no winners or losers, with everyone recieving a boxing cup.
Khalid Kadiri, one of the boxers at the event summed it all up, ‘I would just like to extend my congratulations at the great show the organisers put on, very professional, very well organised….definitely enjoyable for all that were present…’
One of those watching the event was Muhammad Abdullah who said, ‘As a boxer myself, I was inspired to be at an event organised in a Halal atmosphere with such decent brothers. This is just what the youth need to exert their energies, focus their minds and become instilled with a sense of respect and discipline. I look forward to next year’
