On Saturday 22nd April, West London Islamic Centre and Jamia Masjid (WLIC) hosted a ‘CommuniTea Gathering’ farewell & exhibition event for Ealing residents, as part of its planned temporary closure for reconstruction.
In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, guests enjoyed absorbing discussion over hot beverages, delicious freshly baked cakes and savoury delights, all prepared and donated by the local Muslim community. Topped off with a fresh ice cream cone from West London’s original ‘Mosque Ice Cream Van’.
As part of the extensive exhibition, there was a unique showcase of WLIC’s history and its future plans, celebrating over 30 years of community development. Interesting and unknown facts about the building’s past, included details on the filming of a Dr Who episode, when the Doctor of the time played by John Pertwee, had an epic battle against a dinosaur invasion of London in 1973!
Other displays shed light on the original site, which was part of the famous Ealing Autotype Factory, built in 1870 the company was a pioneer in image technology, founded by Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, inventor of no less than the electric light bulb. London’s first, professional Muslim tour guide, Abdul Malik Taylor of Muslim History Tours was also at hand to provide insights on London’s Muslim heritage. Visitors were intrigued by his recent collaborative project with WLIC, the Centre is funding the restoration of the memorial in New Willesden Cemetery of a community pioneer, Haji Mohammed Dollie, who established London’s first Mosque in 1895 in Albert Street NW1, passing away in West Ealing in 1906. The exhibition complemented other heart-warming presentations and performances from the Mosque’s children’s choir and youth clubs. The centre, its staff and volunteers were honoured to host all the respected guests who visited over the course of the day, including representatives of the Jewish Museum, local church leaders including Rev Caz Dunk, members of Westminster Interfaith, Rt Hon Steve Pound MP, Rt Hon Rupa Huq MP, Conservative councillor David Millican and members of Ealing Conservatives.
WLIC was privileged in being able to use the occasion, to once again work in partnership with and donate towards the fantastic work of Acton Homeless Concern. A picture gallery of the day can be viewed here, a huge thank you to everyone who made it such a memorable occasion.
