BHF Training for Imams & Community Workers

Organised by the British Heart Foundation the UK’s leading heart charity in association with the West London Islamic Centre, the Ramadan Imam & Community Worker Training sessions are aimed at providing useful information to help equip those engaged in the community with the facts and knowledge that will allow them to support their congregations and prevent Coronary Heart Disease.

Coronary Heart Disease is a major killer in the UK. Every year 275,000 people have heart attacks, and approximately half of these are fatal. People originating from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India are at higher risk of suffering from heart disease than other community groups.

The good news is that it is possible to reduce the incidence of heart disease if people are informed about making appropriate changes to diet and lifestyle.

The British Heart Foundation appreciates the fact that religious leaders and places of worship are in a position to raise awareness of heart disease among Muslim communities in the United Kingdom. Our experience of working with Muslims has shown that Ramadan provides a great opportunity to encourage Muslims to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and Imams can play a major role in disseminating information to members of their congregations and encouraging them to make positive changes.

Participants will be given specific information about the risk factors associated with the heart disease and the dangers of high salt consumption and smoking and how these can increase the chances of heart disease. Participants will also be informed about how they can encourage smokers to quit smoking, for good, during Ramadan. Details on medication available to help smokers to quit will be presented, in addition to information about local smoking cessation services and basic preventative advice on the recent outbreak of Swine Flu. Lunch and refreshment will be provided and travel expenses reimbursed.

A man came to the Prophet(pbuh) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and people to love me." He said: "Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what people possess and people will love you.' [Related by Ibn Majah]
